Post 1: Introductions

Hi all! I am Nina, a senior and political science major. I have been interested in thinking critically and cautiously about development studies for several years, but up until now have only approached the issues from a social science standpoint. I am excited to use this class as an opportunity to grow my interests and perspective to better understand how creation and implementation of tools/technology occurs. In a similar vein, I am interested to learn about the process of failure––as in, what goes on when an engineering group realizes that what they created doesn't, in fact, work as it should. Also, I'm excited to learn how to use as many power tools as possible!
One type of technology that I'm interested to learn more about is the way that cell phones have been used in developing countries––for agriculture, for health, communication, etc. I imagine much good has come from cell phones, but I also imagine they can't be without their negative impacts, as well. I look forward to using the next few months to think and learn more about these issues!
